Mr. Cheng Yang, an excellent film and television screenwriter that had credits in movies, TV series, commercials, documentaries and independent films, now is to bring the most important project in his career to China’s major TV station.
The political drama “Power and Profit” directed by the famous director Gao Xixi is now scheduled to release in China. Being called the Chinese version of “House of Cards“, this political drama focuses on the mechanism of the Chinese officials’ election, which is similar to the HBO hit drama. The leading role featured Wenli Jiang, who is an award winning actress from China. Through Mr. Yang’s adaptation, Ms Jiang’s role embarked on a wonderful journey, which unveiled part of the political game in China.
Majored in film production at New York Film Academy, Mr. Cheng Yang is one of the few bilingual screenwriters who managed to integrate producing mindsets into screen writing. Through his success in the TV series “Power and Profit”, Mr. Yang demonstrated his various abilities, such as establishing unforgettable characters, mastering scene-rhythm and dramatic elements through the script, and even laid a foundation for post at pre-production. This requires master-level control and insight.
Mr. Yang’s independent film “A Minor Malfunction“, written and directed by himself, won two Best Short Script awards, at both IndieX Film Fest and Independent Shorts Awards. This script also won Semi-Finalist at Indie Short Fest, with nominations from Hollywood Film Competition, New York Movie Awards, Venice Film Awards, Rome Independent Prisma Awards, American Screenwriting Conference and other film festivals.
In addition, as a pilot for an expandable sci-fi drama series, “A Minor Malfunction” has also been favored by production companies including Caishen Ning’s production company, Mumbear Entertainment. Mr. Yang is writing the script for a sophisticated TV show with the same title, which is expected to be produced in China and the United States, with an investment scale of 10 million.
So far, Cheng’s most well-known achievement is the 2018 TV series “Dr. Qin: Medical Examiner”, which in addition to its great commercial success, also set off a trend of pursuing a realistic style in criminal investigation works. The online TV series was produced by Tencent Video with an investment of tens of millions and directed by well-known director Linhao Zhou. It was released on v.Tencent.com in 2018 and a 1.5 billion views so far. Subsequently, the show was authorized to screen on YouTube in 2019, and so far has 2.7 million views.
After many years of screenwriting work on a number of successful film and television projects, Mr. Yang has cooperated with many industry leaders. Not only the screenwriter, but also some directors and directors of photography, including David Armstrong, the photographer of “SAW” and the director of “The Assassin’s Code”, and Joe Russo, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War” Director of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”.
