On December 12, 2023, the 11th China (Kaihua) Root Carving Art and Culture Festival, jointly sponsored by the China Arts and Crafts Association and the Kaihua County People’s Government, was officially launched in the China Kaihua Gengong Buddha Cultural Tourism Zone. At the launching ceremony of the event, Kaihua warmly invited tourists from all over the world to explore the beauty of root carving art among the clear waters and green mountains through wonderful theatrical performances such as the dragon dance performance of “Joss Stick Grass Dragon”, the song and dance of “The Taste of Kaihua”, the recitation of the poem “Gendiao Fu”, and the group singing of “Meet at the Source of the Qianjiang River”.
Located in the western mountainous area of Zhejiang Province, Kaihua County is the headstream of the Qiantang River and an important ecological barrier in East China. The forest coverage rate of Kaihua County is 80.96%, the water quality is maintained in China’s Class I and II standards all year round, the air is fresh, PM2.5≤25 micrograms/cubic meter, the concentration of negative oxygen ions is up to 400,000 per cubic centimeter, and it also has excellent biodiversity, with a total of 6,391 species of biological species. Thanks to the great ecological conditions, in recent years, Kaihua has vigorously developed tourism and explored the path of green development.
The Gengong Buddha Cultural Tourism Zone is the “trump card” of civilized tourism. It is not only the highest-level tourist attraction in China, but also the “world’s largest root carving museum” officially certified by Guinness World Records. As the unique scenic spot in the world that organically integrates the root carving art with China’s 5,000-year-old culture, the Gengong Buddha Cultural Tourism Zone covers an area of 3.03 square kilometers, including more than 40 scenic spots such as the Gengong pagoda, and displays more than 20,000 large-scale root carving art series works, among which the largest root carving work “Shakyamuni main Buddha”, 9.9 meters high and weighing 40 tons, is the world’s largest root carving Buddha statue. The scale of the scenic spot is spectacular and the culture is profound, which is comparable to other well-known scenic spots in China such as the Xi’an Terra-Cotta Warriors.
